In my last brief to everybody. I promised some advises to you in order to smooth your future careers.
I am putting together some thoughts I have now. Some suggestions may fit you, some may fit others,
but it's worthwhile to keep self alerted.
1. always try to keep your desk tidy. if you cannot keep your desk organized, your chance to keep
your multiple work organized is small.
2. I often see the water machine out of water. I believe in the office I am the person that changes
the water bottle most often
. this leads to one thought, there are people who use up the water
but didn't bother to change the bottle and left it to the next person that would use water. this
is a responsibility projection.
3. always give an immediate response to the person who is talking to you or asking you question. \
I think you already know the extremem cases such ask no respond from LA staff and the bad effects.
now what I want to mention is not such extreme cases. I have many times asking hk staff questions.
sometimes people just ignore me for 15 minutes or a few hours and then respond me "it's done".
then at the moment I wonder if the person was focusing on what I was asking. An immediate response
like "ok I am on it" or "I will do it 10 minutes later" will always improve the communication
experience between colleagues.
4. if you are given a task, complete it until you are 120% satisfied with the outcome. it's real and
quite often my experience that staff return tasks like what they did in school submiting homeworks.
in work place, bosses expects not only works get done, but works get done well. it's very important
to know that if I give you a task, you return with 60/100 marks, you get passed in school, but you
lose the next chance for important assignments in work place.
5. as an extension to last point, I would like to point our with limited resource, I prefer to see
smaller scope task done well than big scope task half done, as a judgement to a staff's capability
and responsibility.
6. do not feel shy to disuss task related issue with your boss. if he assign you a task and you don't
understand completely, ask. it's really much better than your task come out with bad results.
7. extension to last point, you can also extend to other situations, if you ask or discuss, be well
prepared. for example, preliminary studies. most bosses don't mind discussing and helping staff
to get their tasks done. but they hate it when you use their time instead of your time. remember, your
boss's time is always valuable than yours.
8. get rid of your multimedia phones, mp3 players, msn etc from work, focus on your job. while it's
understandable no one can focus 100% of time, if there is another staff who doesn't have these, then
you lose the comparision.
9. be truthful. especially one day you are in a management role. one lie or one unwillingness to keep
your promise, you lose the credit you have built up for years.
10.always think in a reversed way. I think I have talked about this many times. but still I want to
emphasis, try to put yourself in the position of your opponent and look at your possition again.
in conclusion, try to be responsible, considerate, well-prepared, mature and stable at your work.
I know these are tiny things and my those sometimes are bossism. A few littles things that may change the way how your boss look at you, why not ?
Since you will be looking for job. I would like suggest you to make the following preparation before going into interview:
1. get to know the company you are being interview. as least thing of a set of good questions to ask to get to know the company.
2. 2 incidents where you have learned something, the progress is important. make it as detailed as you can speak for 1 minute each
3. 2 incidents where you have accomplished something, preferrable bigger scale things. 2 minute each
4. 1 incidents to demonstrate your *cooperation* with colleague or manager to accomplish something. 2 minute
5. 2 incidents where you have faced difficulties, and how you deal with them. don't talk small things, interviewer wouldn't care. 1 minute each.
6. 3 strength; 2(two and only two) weakness, one bigger, one very minor. you must provide suppliment on how you overcome with your weekness! 2 minutes total
7. 2 things you like from your last job. elaborate. 1 minute each
8. your short term(1 year) and mid term(5 year) objectives. what kind of jobs you are looking for. 2 minute
There is always a misconcept by interviewees that caused their bad performance in the interview, that they always wait for interviewer to ask question and they answer. remember, you are not going to there to be asked with questions.
you should go there to gain the opportunity to present yourself. the best interview result is that the interview end up to be a conversation between you and the interviewer, where you should be speaking 80% of the time.
One last thing, always use possitive tones in the interview.
